The Virginia Tech Bass Fishing Team's 1st Annual SML Open

Passing this along because I think it will be a great tournament , right here in my back yard. Jody and the rest of the guys on the VT Bass Fishing Team are an outstanding bunch of young anglers and I think the fishing community needs to embrace  tournaments like this that help fund their teams. I'll be at the tournament sometime during the day and definitely at the weigh in. Come on out and show your support if you are in VA , should be a lot of fun!

The Virginia Tech Bass Fishing Team is excited to present their first annual Smith Mountain Lake Open. It will be held March 4th in conjunction with Angler’s Choice Marine. Angler’s Choice Marine has been running high quality tournaments across Virginia since 2007 and is the leading bass boat dealer in the state. Virginia Tech Bass Fishing Team Vice President Pat Snellings says “we are excited to partner with Angler’s Choice for this tournament; it should be a great opportunity for both sides and a lot of fun for all who participate.”

The tournament will be a team format with a $100 entry fee per team. There will also be a raffle with prizes from JB Custom Rods, Keel Shield, Stick Jacket Fishing Rod Covers and, maybe more! Event t-shirts will be available at the tournament!

For more information you can go to or find the Virginia Tech Bass Fishing Team on Facebook or Google Plus.

Fileting a Striper , 2nd Try

Trying this again. I had some trouble getting this posted here from over on G+. I deleted the previous post , and I regret that because I wrote a good intro that escapes me right now. This is how I clean a Striped Bass. It's a little graphic , for those who don't like seeing blood. As a description of sorts , I scale the fish first because of their large , tough scales. This makes it easy to filet and remove the skin. There are other ways to clean fish , but this is how I do it. Click through the break to see the video.

Have a great week! I'm enjoying a nice little snow storm , a rarity this year. I'll have an important announcement first thing tomorrow concerning a new annual tournament here on my home water that I am really excited about. Be sure to check it out!

Looking Back at 2011 : Part One

Is it really 2012? Wow. I'm just now getting my head on straight for the new year. Until last week I was still dating my checks with 2011 , which either makes me look like a clairvoyant who magically anticipated the exact amount of his bills a year in advance or a dumbass who is running a month or two behind the rest of the world.

I did a ton of blogging in 2011 , more than I ever thought I would be capable of. Some of the posts were complete turds that I didn't even like , a few were turds that the search engines liked , and even fewer were posts that I liked and others seemed to enjoy too. The posts below are mainly just writing without the fishing reports that people like to see. We'll look at the fishing side tomorrow and also maybe I'll talk about the search engine darling that I wrote in 2011 - that I still don't like , but is good for 20 pageviews a day. Until then , let's take a look at a few of the posts I'm not ashamed of :

Playing Outdoor Favorites : Inspired by a writing prompt at the OBN.

5 Easy Steps to a Slimmer You : One that confused a lot of people and gets people here through odd search terms.

My Love Affair with the New River : A few thoughts on the river I learned to fish on.

My Recurring Dream : Explaining what haunts me in my dreams...

The Intimidating Nature of Saltwater Fishing : A guest post I wrote for

Superman to the Rescue?  : Another guest post , this one for

That's all for today. Tomorrow I'll post a few interviews I did with some awesome charter captains and a lure maker , as well as a few of my first attempts at video editing ( maybe )

Have a great week!
