Roanoke Valley Optimist's 44th Annual Fishing Tournament on Smith Mountain Lake

Coming up in about a month is the Cave Spring Optimist's 2012 Fishing Tournament at Gill's Creek Marina on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. I usually fish every year , but the jury's still out on whether or not I make it this year.

Our local news does little to cover the event except for making a token showing during the week of the tourney and to ogle the fish during the weigh in. The mailers the Optimist's club sends out just hit my mailbox a few days ago , so I thought I should probably put the dates and times up for everyone who has landed here looking for info lately.

This years tournament will be held May 4th , 5th and 6th , starting on Friday the 4th and running until noon on the 6th. Official winners will be announced following polygraph testing at the Marina.

If you need more information feel free to contact me HERE

Good luck!

    1. Isaiah ,

Best of luck to you in the tournament! We really need some warm weather to set in to make the fishing a little better , but it's always up in the air this far out. I hope you catch a money fish :)

Keep in mind , the dates listed above are for last year (2012) - I'll post this year's dates as soon as I have confirmation , but it looks like the weekend of May 3,4, and 5 will be the dates for 2013.

  2. Josh im thinking the only way I can win this tournament is catching bass of the bed but im worried that they will be spawning

    1. That's very possible , unfortunately. Here on my ponds bass are already fanning beds and they are usually a week or 2 ahead of bass in the lake. You might be able to catch a few pre spawn fish on the lower end of the lake or around the mouths of bigger creeks , but your best bet is probably going to be fishing the upper end of either the Roanoke RIver or Blackwater river side of the lake. Seems like the rivers hold a lot of big bass this time of year.

By the way , the dates in my comment above for this year are correct - I just haven't gotten around to posting here yet.

Good luck in the tourney! Let me know how you do.
