Rainy Day Fishing

I managed to break away for a few minutes this evening to fish in the rain. I've always loved fishing in the rain. I could sit and listen to the rain splashing into the water for hours on end , provided it's not a driving , windy rain. Today was calm and rainy - perfect for fishing in the pond. The fish were a good deal less aggressive today due to chillier temperatures , but we're fast approaching the time of year when a few degrees drop in air temperature won't hurt the fishing. I love this time of year. A cool , rainy , Spring day and a few fish on the end of my line over the past few days have done wonders to lift my spirits.

A pretty , little bluegill.
Three cookie cutter bass , a pretty bluegill , and a Crappie (not pictured) should hold me for a few days.

Have a great week!

A Good Day of Fishing

Great really , but I save great for big fish and epic blitzes. My baby girl caught her first Crappie , on a jig too. I caught several bass , lost a bunch of bass , and then got into some hot and heavy crappie fishing for a few minutes. All here at the house , all in about 2 hours of fishing , and all on two baits - jigs and flukes , not quite warm enough for anything else yet. I might upload a video at some point , but that's doubtful. Pictures will have to do. My favorite fish of the day was my baby's first Crappie. Second place goes to a black Crappie that I caught , which can only be one of a handful in the pond. Of course , he might just be a white Crappie with heavy black markings , but I'm not sure as I didn't ask him and I can't be bothered to look up how many spines he was supposed to have in his dorsal , and then count them. Onward to the pictures!

 Have a great weekend!

Exploring Some New Water

Here are a few pictures from a recent trip to the James River. Not much happening in the way of fishing due to the unusually cool Spring we've had , but it was great to get out and explore the ponds and three different sections of river. I'll be headed back when the weather warms up to catch a few of the Smallmouth Bass that I know hang out there when the water is warmer.

We've had beautiful weather lately.

I can't wait to see it when everything is green.

A fishy looking stretch of river.

Some kind of sunken boat?

More river

Even more river

Lots of snags , but fishy water for sure.

Behind the snags.

The snag,

I'm sure this is a great shady place to relax in the Summer.

Another section of river.

One of my favorite pictures from the weekend.

A pond hidden in the hills.

More of the pond.

I was tempted...

Always reassuring.

My baby and a worm

Lilly pads! There's a small turtle in their somewhere.

Windy!

Easy to forget you're on the river.

A first for me in freshwater
What a fun weekend of camping with the wife and kids!

Some of these pictures have previously appeared on G+ and Facebook , and a question I posted on G+ along with answers from fellow blogger John from FCS ,  has led me to believe that the snail shell pictured above is from an invasive species. I'm going to look into it further , and hopefully have some answers to post here. It was a good reminder that , as fishermen and women , we need to be vigilant when we see things that appear out of place. I'm afraid invasives are going to become a more common problem as the years go by...

Have a great weekend!

My Horrific Fishing Injury...

Things took a turn for the worst during a recent fishing trip. Of all people , I should have known better , but as they say accidents happen. The good news is that I was prepared , and because of that the reattachment procedure went exceptionally well. I'll even venture to say that I have almost 100% of function back as of right now , which is nothing short of miraculous.

There is a pic below , so if you aren't too squeamish , click through the break and scroll down to see what happened.....
